Assessment of water quality: a case study of the Bouchegouf aquifer north east of Algeria[ ]

The hydrochemistry of groundwater from alluvial aquifer located at Bouchegouf, north–east of Algeria was evaluated for drinking water and irrigation. Six boreholes and two wells were sampled. The physical parameters (pH), Electric Conductivity (EC), Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), TH as well as the concentrations in major ions Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+, Cl -, SO42-, HCO-3, PO3-4 and NO-3 analyzed by standard methods. Two chemical facies are predominant in the study area Na-Cl and Ca-Mg-Cl). Water-rock interaction characterized by the dissolution of carbonates and silicates plays a primordial role in the chemical composition of the groundwater. The hydrochemical study of the area showed that the majority of cations and anions, electric conductivity, the TDS and the TH which characterize the chemical composition of the aquifer are above the limits allowed for the drinking water according to standards. Wilcox and Richards diagrams reveal that, barring a few locations, most of the groundwater samples are unsafe for irrigation purposes.

Non-linear scattering effects in fiber optic cables: a comprehensive review[ ]

In this article, Scattering phenomena and its classification has been demonstrated. Attenuation is the main loss mechanism in an optical fiber. Absorption and scattering of signals results in attenuation. There are two types of scattering losses. They are linear scattering and nonlinear scattering. In optics, the term linear and non-linear mean “power-independent” and “power dependent” phenomena, respectively. In linear scattering, attenuation occurs when optical power is transferred from one mode to another keeping frequency unaltered. There are two categories in linear scattering. They are Rayleigh scattering and Mie scattering. Rayleigh scattering is the main loss mechanism in the visible range. Rayleigh scattering loss can be minimized by choosing longest possible operating wavelength. If the size of the defect is greater than one-tenth of the wavelength of light, the scattering mechanism is called Mie scattering. Non linear scattering occurs when frequency is changed during optical power transfer. The two types of nonlinear scattering are stimulated Brillouin scattering and stimulate Raman scattering. Stimulated Brillouin scattering is a cause of concern in long distance systems, in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) systems and remote pumping of an erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) through a separate optical fiber. Stimulated Raman scattering creates problems in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) systems.

Role of Moulding Water Content on the Strength Properties of Ground Granulated Blast furnace Slag Stabilized Lithomargic Soil in the Presence of Sodium Salts[ ]

Shedi soil or lethomargic soil is very common throughout west coast of India from Malabar (Kerala) to Ratnagiri in Maharastra. Lithomargic soils are considered to be "treacherous soil" by geotechnical engineers due to its low strength and unpredictable behavior. Studies on this type of soil are meager and this further enhances the difficulties in designing structure in lithomargic soil stratum. Few researchers have investigated the stabilization characteristics of this soil using ingredients such as lime, flyash, quary dust or pond ash with lime, coconut coir with lime, fly ash with sodium salts etc and have got encouraging results. The present investigation involves a study on the effect of “Ground Granulated Blast furnace Slag”(GGBS) and chemical admixture such as sodium salts on the geotechnical properties(compaction and unconfined strength) of lithomargic soil. The quantities of slag added to the shedi soil, as percentage of dry soil mass were in the range of 10-60%. The results inferred that the 30% addition of slag gives optimum unconfined compressive strength ((UCS) values for 90 days of curing. The maximum dry density increases while the optimum water content decreases with increase in the GGBS content. Further investigations were carried out to find the effect of sodium salts on the compressive strength for various curing periods. From the results it is found that the addition of 1% sodium salts enhances the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) values of stabilized shedi soil. The investigations on the role of moulding water content from the dry of optimum to wet of optimum condition with all the above stabilizing ingredients and additives for various curing periods show that the strength ratio increases by 2 – 10 folds. Shedi soil when stabilized with 30% GGBS and 1% sodium hydroxide salt developed maximum strength ratio with water content on wet of optimum side. This is due to sufficient water availability in the mixture which is used for the hydration of excess silicates and calcium forming C-S-H gel and making slag a more useful pozzolanic material.

Correlations of Hydrophile-Lipophile Balance with properties affecting water-in-oil emulsion stability of Nigerian crude oils[ ]

Standard methods were used to determine the physical parameters of Nigerian crude oils sampled from Flowing Tubing Head Pressure (FTHP) of well heads in different locations. Direct correlations of the HLB values with the measured physical parameters were not observed. However, with the same r2 value of 87%, the total acid number (TAN) -a precursor to the HLB, increases exponentially as API gravity decreases and increases as the viscosity increases in power regressions. The correlation of the total acid number of the sampled crudes with the dielectric constant values has a coefficient of determination of 0.74 in power regression. The results showed that Nigerian crude oil samples are low in the components that may contribute to the effective HLB and chemical stabilizations. Electrical factors resulting from wax and solid particles may be more responsible for the stability of their emulsions. These serves as a prelude to the application of interrelationships in some crude oil’s physical properties in screening and selection of water in-crude oil emulsion demulsifiers. The results also provide a means of predicting the naphthenic acid corrosivity of Nigerian crude oil using their physical parameters.

Hydrochemistry and Assessment on Groundwater Quality of the Aquifer of Heliopolis in North of Guelma-Algeria[ ]

Groundwater quality assessment is important to ensure sustainable safe use of water. In the study area, the mountain aquifer represents the main source of water supply for drinking and agriculture seeing the shortage in superficial water in this area. In the present work, the first attempt has been made, for the first time in this region, to study the hydrochemistry and assessment on groundwater quality of the aquifer, based on an analysis of physical–chemical parameters to this purpose, water samples were collected during the period of may 2015 from 8 drills and 4springs to represent this ain aquifer. Methodology applied in this study is based on standard procedure. The water samples were investigated with respect to TDS, pH, CE; calcium (Ca2+), magnesium (Mg2+), sodium (Na+), potassium (K+), chloride (Cl-), sulphate (SO42-), bicarbonates (HCO-3) and nitrate (NO-3). The analytical results obtained were interpreted using hydro chemical analysis. The results show that the waters have pH values ranging between 6.90 and 7.82, EC between 610 and 854 mg/L, TDS ranging between 455 and 672 mg/l and nitrate concentrations between 2.5 and 47.7 mg/L. The concentration of nitrates is explained by the utilization of chemical fertilizers in agriculture. All samples are of Ca-Mg–HCO3 and Ca-Cl2 and Ca-SO4 water types. Physical and chemical analyses show that the most of the samples are fit for human consumption. Based on the analytical results, chemical indices like sodium adsorption ratio Kelly’s index, Magnesium hazard and residual sodium carbonate were calculated which show that most of the samples are good for irrigation.

Fault Tolerance of 12/8 Switched Reluctance Motor Using Fuzzy logic Controller[ ]

The nature of the magnetic independence of the phase windings in a switched reluctance motor (SRM) enable it to operate despite partial failures occurring in the motor-converter unit. However on the occurrence of the fault, the speed and torque variations in the motor invite problems and urge attention. Therefore fault-tolerant SRM drive systems become the order of the day and assuage to explore fresh applications. The paper develops an adaptive fuzzy logic controller (FLC) for be-hiving a fault-tolerant ability to the SRM drive used in automobile applications. It allows continuously adapting its properties to regulate the machine speed and torque in accordance with the requirements of the drive system even under fault conditions. The action of the fuzzy system operates to generate the current reference and the inference system creates the rule base relating the parameters to the type of the faults under consideration. The rules engage the specific changes in the system parameters to diagnose the faults and evaluate the performance through its post-fault characteristics of the SRM in terms of torque and speed ripples to show its fault-tolerant capabilities. The reasoning philosophy of the FLC serves to exploit the inbuilt corrective prodigy in the SRM for arriving at precise operating requirements. The attributes of the inherent fault-tolerant features attach a sense of reliability to the motor and incite a new dimension for its use in the vehicular world.

Application of First Order Kinetics for Modeling Chlorine Decay in Water Networks[ ]

Modeling chlorine residuals in water networks is quite complex, as decay rates depend on many factors. In this paper, first order chlorine decay reactions were used to simulate the water distribution network of Mtaileb-Rabieh in Lebanon. A set of water samples were analyzed for free residual chlorine. The experimental results showed that the value of the bulk decay rate is (-8*10-5 min-1). An extended period simulation was prepared using “Watercad” software. The hydraulic and water quality models were calibrated by adjusting Hazen-Williams coefficient and the pipe wall decay rate respectively. The results showed that pipe wall decay rate for 65-year-old cast iron and 20-year-old cement lined ductile iron pipes are (-0.5 day-1) and (- 0.05 day-1) respectively. As well, it was observed that 60% of the chlorine loss is due to pipe wall reaction, while 10% & 30% represent the bulk & tank reactions respectively.

Negative Binomial and Generalized Poisson Regressions in Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever Data at Central Java 2012[ ]

Poisson regression model, also known as Generalized Linear Model (GLM) was one of the most popular techniques for the analysis of count data. One important assumption for the Poisson regression model was the mean of the distribution must be equal to the variance. Inequality mean and variance led to serious underestimation of standard error and misleading inference for the regression parameters. This problems led an overdispersion. This paper proposed the Negative Binomial and Generalized Poisson regression models as alternative for handling overdispersion. The result shown that based on the test for the dispersion parameter and the goodness-of-fit measure for the total number of Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever morbility Data at Central Java 2012, the Generalized Poisson regression model performed better than the other regression models.

Enhanced Authentication Scheme using Image Captcha[ ]

Authentication is the act of validating the truth of an attribute of a user or a piece of data claimed true by an entity. Authentication is the method of confirming one’s identity. It involves confirming the identity of a person by validating the user identity proofs or verifying the authenticity of a website using x.509 digital certificates. Authentication is related to multiple fields. In art, historic and anthropology, a general problem is to verify that the given artifact was produced by a definite person or in a definite place or period of history. In computer science, verifying a person's identity is often required to allow access to confidential data or systems. The basic authentication scheme is using alphanumerical usernames and passwords. To crack these passwords, many times attackers use intelligent programs. To avoid this, Captchas can be used as an add-on security measure to verify whether the interacting person is human or an automated bot. There are several methods proposed by various authors. In this research, authors propose an elegant method to design the captcha which prevents the interaction of intelligent bots in any information system.

Shape Analysis, Quantitative Percentage Determination and Depositional Environment of Detrital Quartz Grains of the Atrai River Sand, Naogaon District, Bangladesh[ ]

The present study mainly embodies the shape (roundness and sphericity) analysis, quantitative percentage determinationand Depositional Environment of detrital quartz grains of the Atrai River sand, Naogaon district, Bangladesh. The study shows that, maximum grains are sub-angular moderately spherical shaped carried by both in traction and suspension population through an aqueous medium of moderate energy condition whereas the sub-rounded spherical grains traveled by traction population covering more or less a long distance. Presence of some angular grains with low sphericity witnessed a shorter distance of transportation. Conversely, a considerable amount of rounded and a few well-rounded grains having high sphericity indicates multi cycles of transportation covering a longer distance anddeposition of sedimentation took place in fluvial environment. These grains (sediments) derived mainly from crystalline igneous and older sedimentary rocks;whilethe contribution of metamorphic rock is insignificant. The quantitative study of detrital quartz grains within the depository is less than fifty percent (42.29%) which cannot be recognized as silica sand.
