An Intelligent Marketing Expert System for Identifying Prospective Customers in Targeted Advertising so as to Enhance Profitability[Full-Text ] Fale Mantim Innocent, Jakawa Jimmy Nerat, Pwul Klingshak, Dagwam Basil Naanman, Sa’ad Sakinat MaigoroMarketing is an integral part of any thriving business. It is no doubt that only successful marketing campaigns yield profit. The major problem faced by these marketing campaigns is the identification of prospective customers. Random advertisement can be very expensive hence, targeted advertising should be adopted in order to reduce advertisement cost which in turn maximizes profit. This research proposes and implements a rule-based inference engine which was built using Python to identify prospective customers for targeted advertising. To achieve this feat, the inference engine analyzes customers’ demographics, buying history, and commentaries. The commentary analysis mechanism of the inference engine was built using Python’s Natural Language Toolkit. The other programmable components of this system were built in C#.NET using Microsoft Visual Studio 2017. The knowledge base of the system was developed using Microsoft SQL Server 2012.

Best-Fit Virtual Machine Placement Algorithm for Load Balancing in a Cloud Computing Environment[Full-Text ] Fale Mantim Innocent, Mwanret Alphonsus, Lar Nansel, Edwin Freedom Titus, Abdulmalik DasheIn Cloud Computing, load balancing is key to the maximization of profit as load imbalance leads to excessive power consumption and inefficiency in terms of computational power. Load Balancing goes in two directions: firstly, it is required to distribute tasks across Virtual Machines; and secondly, to efficiently place Virtual Machines on physical servers or physical machines such that resource and energy consumption is minimized. This paper proposes a new Virtual Machine Placement algorithm: ‘Best-Fit Virtual Machine Placement Algorithm’. This algorithm computes tasks resource demands, models a Virtual Machine that fits those demands, and places the Virtual Machine on a physical server that has the minimum remaining resources that is large enough to accommodate such a Virtual Machine. This technique ensures that resources are not over-utilized nor are they under-utilized. Simulated Data was obtained using CloudSim and Microsoft Visual Studio’s C#.NET was used to experiment and test the performance of this algorithm side-by-side its counterparts: ‘Multi-Objective Ant Colony System Virtual Machine Placement Algorithm’, ‘Max-BRU’ and ‘Enhanced Firefly Algorithm’. The result of this experiment shows that the proposed ‘Best-Fit Virtual Machine Placement Algorithm’ is not only efficient but competitive.

Experimental study on the determination of shear strength parameter of bouldery soils using large triaxial calibration chamber[Full-Text ] Peregrinus Dhae Siga Taa, Paulus Pramono Rahardjo, A.Aziz DjayaputraIn the analysis of slope stability often encountered the condition of certain areas there is a slope mixture of sand soil material, gravel, and dominant boulder. The mixed material is termed in this study as "Bouldery Soils" material. These conditions are complex and heterogeneous materials that are widely used in geotechnical engineering. In practice, the material of the boulder soil mixture, the effect of the boulder particles is particularly neglected in the shear strength analysis. To measure the shear strength parameters (cohesion, c and internal shear angle, φ) on soil material conditions or rock conditions using both direct shear testing and triaxial trials is now common in the laboratory. But to measure the shear strength characteristics of the soil-boulder mixture material (bouldery soils) is still rare. The difference in bouldery soils is the background of this research, followed by the development of calibration chamber as an Unconsolidated-Undrained Triaxial Test (TX-UU). In this research was done on some bouldery soils composition to determine the stress-strain characteristics of bouldery soils and to obtain shear strength parameters according to Mohr-Coulomb criteria.

Profitability of Investment in Biofortified Food Crop: A Case Study of Biofortified Cassava Value Chain in Nigeria[Full-Text ] Adebayo Bamire, Ayodeji Ogunleye, Adewale Oparinde and Paul IlonaBiofortification is one of the promising interventions to address global micronutrient deficiencies and attaining the Sustainable Development Goals by year 2050. To achieve this goal, scaling up such an intervention by creating efficient marketing and supply chain systems would require private sector investments. One of the barriers to the uptake of new technology by the private sector is usually lack of empirical knowledge about return on investment. This study examined the profitability of private sector investments in biofortification using the case of biofortified vitamin A cassava value chain in Nigeria. A multistage random sampling was used to select 130 businesses. Findings from the study revealed that Vitamin A cassava has a high level of integration accounting for 53% of the total volume of cassava traded by all businesses surveyed. The result indicates that investing in vitamin A cassava as a business is very profitable with the level of profit ranging from 79% (micro scale investors) to 190% (medium scale investors). The larger the scale of investment into vitamin A cassava, the more profit investors earn. These results have implications for the design of effective advocacy strategies to attract more private sector investments into vitamin A cassava value chain in Nigeria.

Backpropagation Networks and Multilayer Perceptron[Full-Text ] Saroj SinghBackpropagation(BP) or generalized delta learning rule has been discussed. The algorithm uses least mean square error minimization strategy. Modifications in the weight are taken along the –ive gradient direction to reduce the error. The activation function used in the BP is sigmoidal function. The limitation of BP is that it is prone to local minima just like gradient descent formula. Backpropagation network is Multilayer Feed-forward network with different network transfer function in Artificial Neural Network and a more powerful learning rule. The learning rule is called Backpropagation which is a kind of gradient descent technique with backward error propagation. It is a supervised learning method and is an implementation of the Delta learning rule. It requires a teacher that knows or can calculate the desired output for any given input.

Biaxial Buckling Coefficients of Thin Rectangular Isotropic Plates, Having One Edge Simply Supported And The Other Edges Clamped[Full-Text ] Stanley Emeka IwuohaThis work was concerned with the application of the Tailor McLaurin’s series in the determination of the buckling coefficients of thin rectangular SCCC plates loaded biaxially. The study was limited to thin rectangular isotropic plates, having aspect ratios between 1 and 2. The particular equation for the determination of the critical buckling load for the SCCC plate, was obtained by substituting the particular shape function (obtained via the Tailor-McLaurin’s series) into the governing equation for the buckling of biaxially loaded plates. The result was obtained as the force in the x-direction in terms of that in the y-direction using a relationship constant-k which varied from 0.1 to 1. The numerical values of the aspect ratios and k, were substituted into the critical buckling load equation, to obtain the critical buckling load coefficients for each aspect ratio and k-value. The results showed that as the aspect ratios increased from 1 to 2 and as the k-values increased from 0.1 to 1, the buckling coefficients reduced respectively. Given that no results were found in the literature to compare with those of the present study, It was hence concluded that the results of this work are original.
