GREEN LIBRARY - SPACE AND DESIGN[ ]

Developing a Green building is the practice of creating structures and using processes that are environmentally responsible and resource-efficient throughout a building life cycle from the selection to design operation. The central goal of green buildings are to produce physical structures that from their initial conception and design, and it extend to include efficient use of energy water and other resources as well as the reduction of waste, pollution and environmental degradation. Green approach to buildings recognizes the critical importance of protecting the building occupants healthy and dressing factors, such as air and lighting quality. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a non- profit international organization give points based green building certification. Buildings are a series of systems including the structure not just the structure or the form and shape of the building. Green must be sustainable to be successful. It is not an instantaneous thing. Green Design must be measurable interims of performance.

Hydrologic analysis in a region with Cascade of Hydropower Plants- A Review Paper[ ]

Hydropower is one of the dominant renewable sources of energy. It is a clean and Eco- friendly. An efficient Hydropower production system could be run by knowing the complete details of the surface water flow around the system and their contribution towards the river stretch in which the system is built. The study is carried out in a region around which Series of barrages are put in place for every 9m fall of head downstream of Mettur dam along a 100 kilometre stretch in the Cauvery river in Erode District, Tamil Nadu, India. Most of the Barrages failed to obtain the required head for the power production due to the insufficient heading up of water in the barrages and obstructions in the tail race of the channel against the free flow.

INFLUENCE OF MINERAL ADMIXTURES ON EXPANSIVE SOIL[ ]

Expansive soils are known as shrink-swell soils which is highly plastic material which contains clay minerals such as Montmorillonite, Illite group which attracts and absorbs water that poses several challenges to civil engineers. They are considered a potential natural hazard, which can cause extensive damage to structures, if not treated. Such soils swell when given an access to water and shrink, when they dry out. In order to improve the characteristics of expansive soil, stabilization techniques were used.

Meteorological and Hydrological Drought Assessment – A Review[ ]

Drought conditions result from a lack of precipitation and this has many effects on the surrounding land and weather conditions. It can have many devastating effects on communities and the surrounding environment. The amount of devastation depends on the strength of the drought and the length of time an area is considered to be in the drought condition. The occurrence of drought event creates a complex web of impacts that spans to many sectors of ecology, environmental, social and economy. It has both direct and indirect effect on the mankind. Hence, a proper knowledge and understanding of this inevitable natural hazard is very essential for the management and planning before or during a drought. In this paper several research papers on meteorological and hydrological drought assessment methods are reviewed. Literature dealing with drought assessment based on indices and drought indicators are reviewed. Research papers based on meteorological drought assessment using indices are studied in detail and classified based on the type of indicators involved as metrological drought assessment using precipitation and evaporation. Similarly, literature on hydrological drought assessment using surface water and groundwater are reviewed in this paper.

PROPERTIES OF MANUFACTURED SAND[ ]

The present investigation aims to study the Durability properties of concrete in which manufactured sand (M-sand) is used as a partial and full replacement for natural sand. To retain the natural resource such as natural sand an attempt is made in this research by partially replacing the natural sand with M-sand. To study basic durability characteristics of concrete M30 grade were selected. In the durability study the conventional and M-sand concrete is tested by conducting the percentage weight loss for conventional concrete. The present paper focuses on investigating characteristics of M30 concrete with partial replacement of cement with Ground Granulated Blastfurnace Slag (GGBS) and fine aggregate with the Manufactured sand . It is found that by the partial replacement of cement with GGBS and fine aggregate with Manufactured sand helped in improving the durability of the concrete substantially compared to normal mix concrete increased results the durability property of concrete is enchanced by partial replacement of sand with 50% of M-sand for the grade of High Performance Concrete.

RECYCLED MATERIALS IN CIVIL ENGINEERING[ ]

We never educate directly, but indirectly by means of the environment. Whether we permit chance environments to do the work, or whether we design environments for the purpose makes a great difference. — John Dewey

Robotics in Civil Engineering[ ]

A robot is a reprogrammable, multifunctional manipulator designed to move materials, parts, tools or specialized devices through variable programmed motions for the performance of variety of tasks. It is an autonomous machine that is capable of mobility, dealing with large forces, harsh environment and is equipped with some cognitive skills. Robotics is the science of designing, building and using robots. It is the physical extension of computer technology. The greatest incentive for robotisation on construction sites is in the cost of labour, of meeting environmental, safety and health regulations and avoidance of disruptive effects of strikes. These machines perform high-volume, simple and repetitive tasks most economically. The robot requirements for construction tasks and its applications are in inspection, maintenance, spraying, cleaning, welding, tunneling, demolition, site clearance, underwater work and nuclear plant construction are reviewed in this paper.

SMART STORMWATER DRAINAGE[ ]

In this paper, a comparison has been done between various systems of drainage. This paper aims to analyze various ways of quick draining of storm water. Selecting a proper drainage system always has been discussed in various fields. In anisotropic soils, this problem is more sensitive for experts. Geology of a region is primarily divided into sandy, clayey and hard rock regions. Therefore percolation rate of water is different for each type of soil. Therefore suitable drainage system should be used depending on the type of soil. Rather than letting the water fall under gravity, which happens with traditional downpipes, it sucks the water off the area at high velocities than normal traditional systems. Siphonic drainage works in a different way when compared to other systems.

VALIDATION OF ORGANIC REMOVAL EFFECIENCY IN EGSB REACTOR ON SLAUGHTERHOUSE WASTEWATER[ ]

Poultry slaughter houses produce significant volumes of wastewater with highly charged in soluble and insoluble organics. This wastewater contains high levels of organics such as Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD5), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Nitrogen and Phosphorus from such as blood, fat, grease, and proteins. The aim of this work is to validate the performance of Expended Granular Sludge Bed Reactor (EGSB) to treat the slaughter house wastewater in a simple up flow manner, expected to remove high COD efficiency resulting from high biomass retention in the system. Slaughterhouse wastewater contains diluted blood ,protein, fat, and suspended solids. The highly contaminated wastewater should be treated before discharged in to the river, streams, sewers, and other water bodies. The experimental work was carried out on performance of expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB) system with varying organic loadings. Five hydraulic retention time was maintained throughout the study such as 1.98, 2.45,3.20,4.63, and 8.36 days. Removal efficiency of COD was achieved from 44.6%, to 87.5% with mesophilic range.
