Survey on Coupled-Field and Fatigue Analysis on Connecting Rod Bearing using Finite Element Method[Full-Text ]
S.Settu, S.Manikandan, S.Ganesh, M.KrishnamoorthiPerform a finite element analysis is to model the behavior of fatigue cracks in bi material specimen with an interface perpendicular to the crack plane and also perform a coupled thermo mechanical analysis on biomaterial specimen. In I.C engines, the power must be transferred from the piston-connecting rod assembly to the crankshaft via the plain bearings at the big end of the connecting rod. These bearings are made by bi materials generally steel and aluminium alloys. These bearing are subjected by mechanical load and thermal load due to lubricant oil. The engine bearing material may fail due to more deformation. The engine bearing may also suffer fatigue failure due to cyclic loads. Results show the deformation and fatigue strength of bearing material which helps to improve the design and innovation of new bearing materials.

EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF THE BEHAVIOUR OF INTERFACES BETWEEN CARBON FIBRE REINFORCED POLYMERS AND SC SOIL[Full-Text ]
S. Subburaj, K.S. Parthiban and M. MuruganThe foundation designer must consider the behavior of both structure and soil and their interaction with each other. The interaction problem is of importance to many civil engineering situations and it covers a wide spectrum of problems. These include the study of shallow and deep foundations, floating structures, retaining wall- soil systems, tunnel lining, buried structures, earth structures etc., In recent years, Fibre Reinforced Polymers (FRPs) have been introduced in the field of geo-technical engineering to solve such problems as earthen retention, unstable slopes and strengthening of foundation structures. Hence it is important to study the interfacial behavior between these materials with soil. This study conducts a series of direct shear tests to investigate the interface friction angle between Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) sheet wrapped concrete specimens to the clayey sand (SC) soil. The experimental result shows that there was a decrease in the angle of interface friction with CFRP wrapping.

EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON MORTAR USING NATURAL ADMIXTURES[Full-Text ]
P. Vijay Prabhu, S. Arther Prabhakar, R. Iyappan and M. MuruganCement forms an integral part of the modern construction industry for past 100 years. Though cement mortar offers early strength, faster construction, it has number of disadvantages such as it is too strong for most of the building, the environmental impacts during its manufacture, energy consumption during manufacture. Lime is arguably the world first true green and versatile building material. With the introduction of Portland cement during the nineteenth century the use of lime mortar in new constructions gradually declined, largely due to Portland’s ease of use, quick setting and compressive strength. Lime posses’ greater qualities such as stickiness, ease of applications, breathability moisture resistance, natural antiseptic, self -healing, durability, low thermal conductivity, incombustible, solar production, harmonious balance. The traditional lime binder offers greater durability but less strong compared to cement. Now-a-days various chemicals are used as admixture to improve the strength and performance of concrete. The cement and chemicals used in modern construction causes environmental pollution and its effect is significant. But a variety of plants and animal products used in traditional lime mortar not only improves the strength but also proves its durability for centuries. It also helps to retrieve the traditional concept of additional of admixture to concrete. By shifting ourselves to use such eco-friendly (natural) admixtures in mortar will lead the construction industry towards sustainable development.

EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON CONCRETE USING SEA SAND AS FINE AGGREGATE[Full-Text ]
R. Mahendran, K. Godwin, T. Gnana Selvan and M. MuruganConcrete is the most popular building material in the world. River sand has been the most popular choice for the fine aggregate component of concrete in the past, but overuse of the material has led to environmental concerns, the depleting of securable river sand deposits and a concomitant price increase in the material. Therefore, it is desirable to obtain cheap, environmentally friendly substitutes for river sand that is preferably sea sand. The Land Reclamation and Development Board (Sri Lanka) plans to popularize the use of sea sand as an alternative to river sand. According to the experts in the global construction trade, Sea Sand is being used in the construction industry in the Asian Region and some leading European countries. Civil Engineering Department of University of Moratuwa (Sri Lanka) and the National Building Research Organization [NBRO] (Sri Lanka) have confirmed that the sea sand pumped from a distance of about ten kilometers is very suitable for building construction industry. This study is to experiment the suitability to use beach/sea sand as a substitute for river sand as fine aggregate for concrete.

VEHICLE INTEGRATED WHEEL ALIGNMENT ALERT SYSTEM[Full-Text ]
BALAKRISHNAN.T, HARIRAMAN.R, JAYACHANDRAN.R, JAYASRI MEENACHI.VIn automobile, there are lots of reasons for road accidents. One among them is losing stability or control of the vehicle. The key reason for this is the change in wheel alignment of the vehicle that makes the vehicle to lose control. If there is a change in wheel alignment with its physical fittings or if the tire direction or Normal degree changes immediately the sensor placed near the wheel will sense and this is sent to the embedded circuit to indicate the error threshold. Our ultimate idea will help us in maintaining the wheel alignment by indicating an alert signal in the dashboard of the driver, when it senses the change in the alignment of the wheel. By maintaining the wheel alignment not only avoids collision of vehicles, it also increases the fuel efficiency of the vehicle and reduces the tire wear & bolt wear of the vehicle. This paper presents unique and innovative use of vehicle dashboard for the measurement of automobile wheel parameters, such as camber and toe. The hardware and software realizations are also explored in this paper. The system practical application shows that its performance meets the design requirements.

FABRICATION AND PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENT OF MANUALLY POWERED FODDER CUTTER[Full-Text ]
Kalaiselvan P, Kesavan P, Satheesh kumar p, Karthikeyan m, Sakthivel, BaluvenkateshIn India, Animal husbandry is a vital part of the rural economy. Almost every rural family keeps at least a cow or buffalo for meeting milk requirement and to earn some money for daily expenses. The milk production is predominantly affected by cattle feeding . However most of cattles are fed with whole crop. It may leads to wastage of feeding. It was noted that there is always scarcity of fodder feeding in summer. In such situation the whole crop is to be cut into small pieces so that fodder can be used effectively. Presently fodder cutting machines are electrically operated. But today there is huge shortage of electricity almost every parts of India. To overcome uncertainty of electricity, we can replace electrically driven motor by manually powered cattle feed cutter. The fodder cutter energized by human powered flywheel motor is suitable for marginal farmer who have 2-3 cattle. The experimentation carried out for establishing empirical model for identified variables affecting cutting of crop resides.

DESIGN AND ANALYSIS OF COMPOSITE DRIVE SHAFT[Full-Text ]
A.Sridhar, Dr. R. Mohan, R.Vinoth KumarAlmost all automobiles which correspond to design with Rear wheel drive and front engine installation have transmission shafts. In heavy duty vehicles driveshaft is one of the important components. The weight reduction of the drive shaft can have a certain role in the general weight reduction of the vehicle and is a highly desirable goal, it can be achieved without increase in cost and decrease in quality and reliability. The aim of this work is to replace the conventional steel driveshaft of automobiles with an appropriate composite driveshaft. The conventional drive shafts are made in two pieces for reducing the bending natural frequency, whereas the composite shafts can be made as single-piece shafts, thus reducing the overall weight. The design parameters were optimized with the objective of minimizing the weight of composite drive shaft. The composite drive shaft made up of high modulus material is designed by using CAD software and tested in ANSYS for optimization of design or material check and providing a best material. The replacement of composite materials can results in considerable amount of weight reduction if compared to conventional steel shaft.
