INTRODUCTION
***EVALUATION OF THE FLEXURAL STRENGTH OF HEAT POLYMERIZED POLY (METHYL METHACRYLATE) DENTURE RESIN REINFORCED WITH FIBRES – AN IN VITRO STUDY
Introduction:
In recent advancements , there has been continued refinement of dental materials available for dental practice. The applications of resins have been extended to increased clinical uses in various areas of prosthetic and restorative dentistry.
Alterations in the technique of manipulation and nature of the dental materials product have impacted the range of application in dentistry .The present study was done to measure and compare the flexural strength of heat polymerized poly-methyl- methacrylate (PMMA) resin reinforced with fibers of glass, polypropylene, and carbon.
Materials and methods:
The present study was performed in vitro on 80 PMMA denture base resin specimens. Specimens were divided into four subgroups with 20 specimens each and tested for flexural strength using universal testing machine.
Results:
In group I, the flexural strength mean value was 63.59 MPa. In group II, the flexural strength mean value was 70.01 MPa. In group III, the flexural strength mean value was 66.90 MPa, while in group IV, the flexural strength mean value was 72.17 MPa.
Conclusion:
All the reinforcement groups namely glass fiber, polypropylene fiber, and carbon fiber improves flexural strength of heat cured acrylic resin samples and finally carbon fiber reinforced samples had the greatest flexural strength than all other groups.
